It can be tough to navigate these challenges when the holidays can already be a stressful time for many.
Here are 3 tips on how to support your child with ADHD during family gatherings:
Challenge #1: Sitting through holiday meals
- With family gatherings can come lengthy holiday meals for kids to sit through, which can be particularly challenging for kids with ADHD who have trouble staying seated.
Tip #1: Offer some expectations and flexibility
- Kids will do best when they have some parameters for what to expect during family gatherings.
- For example, it may be helpful to talk to them about having a kids table during meals and letting them know it’s okay if they do need to leave the table for a movement break.
Challenge #2: Being overstimulated
- All of the loud noises and people can be A LOT for anyone to handle.
Tip #2: Find a calming spot
- If you’re at home or at someone else’s house, find a place where your child can go when they need a break,
- or some time to be alone to listen to music,
- or play a brief game on a phone before returning to the group.
Challenge #3: Needing constant monitoring
- Many kids with ADHD do require more direction from their parents, and this can be hard as parents are typically busier during family gatherings.
Tip #3: Identify activities ahead of time
- Find some activities that your child can help with during the family gathering such as setting the table or doing a craft to help decorate the table.
- By having an activity that will keep them occupied, this will help you out when you’re busy.
