How Do I Prepare My Child for a Neuropsych Eval?

A neuropsychological evaluation is a test designed to measure cognitive function.

It takes into account things like attention span, motor coordination, language skills, memory, executive functioning, and more.

Rather, ADHD is often diagnosed through a series of assessments and evaluations.

While anyone can undergo a neuropsych eval, it’s not uncommon for doctors to encourage children to take this test if they have difficulty concentrating, memory issues, or other cognitive functioning problems that might impact their quality of life.

Of course, it’s not uncommon for a young child to hear the word “evaluation” and feel a little overwhelmed or even scared.

As a parent or caregiver, there are things you can do to prepare your child for a neuropsych eval and potentially ease some of your own concerns in the process.

Communicate Openly

One of the best things you can do for your child before a neuropsych eval is to open up the lines of communication.

  • Reassure them that the test doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with them. Rather, it’s a way to figure out how to help them learn and grow more effectively.

  • It can also be important to let them know what’s included in the evaluation. Some kids might automatically assume a medical test involves invasive procedures or things like needles.

    • Nothing like that is involved in this kind of evaluation, and it’s important for your children to know what won’t be included and what kinds of tests will be administered.

    • You can talk to them about this yourself or hold a meeting or two with the evaluator to allow them to explain further.

The evaluation process will include things like puzzles and games, but it will also include questions.

Some parts will be fun, while others might be a bit challenging. Make sure your child is prepared for both.

Focus on the Positive

Again, if your child is feeling uneasy about the evaluation, reframe the experience by focusing on the benefits and what might happen when it’s over.

A neuropsych evaluation will help your child learn more about themselves and how they think. It will also allow everyone to provide them with the exact support they need.

When you frame the assessment this way, you can take something that might seem scary or overwhelming and turn it into something your child looks forward to.

Practice at Home

Obviously, you’re not going to be able to completely replicate a neuropsych eval on your own.

But, if you find out what some of the activities are, you can “practice” in a familiar setting where your child is comfortable.

  • For example, try doing some puzzles together at home.

  • Or, play a few problem-solving games that give your child the chance to use their skills.

Remind them that these activities might be similar to what they’ll experience during the evaluation.

It will help them feel more prepared and less hesitant when that day comes.

Set Them Up for Success

Talking, planning, and preparing long before the evaluation is important.

But ensuring they’re healthy and ready to go on the day itself can be just as crucial.

  • Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep before the evaluation.

  • Offer them a healthy breakfast and try to maintain a normal morning routine to keep them comfortable and calm.

  • If they have any additional questions about what to expect, offer your clear answers and reassurance.

  • Be sure to stay calm as you head to the evaluation.

If you have questions or concerns about what to expect for a neuropsych eval or you want to know whether your child should undergo this kind of assessment, feel free to reach out and set up a consultation soon.
